“Unlocking Digital Sovereignty: AIFOD Winter Summit Afternoon Sessions on Data Security Strategies”
The afternoon at AIFOD’s Winter Summit kicked off with four engaging parallel forums that delved into essential facets of AI development. The session titled “Reclaiming Digital Sovereignty in the AI Age” presented by World Digital Governance unveiled the groundbreaking idea of the “Digital You,” which encompasses personal data, AI models, and virtual assets. This session highlighted the intrinsic right to digital sovereignty and suggested a triadic governance framework aimed at tackling existing issues surrounding data ownership and AI evolution.
The other parallel forums included “AI Legal Challenges: IP, Privacy, Liability” led by KKG Legal, “Is AI’s Speed Truly Sustainable Development?” by Competence City, and the AIFOD Working Group Consultation Session.
Following these stimulating discussions, the AIFOD Senior Fellow Conferment Ceremony was held, marking a pivotal point in honoring excellence within the realm of AI innovation. The afternoon continued with three in-depth sessions focused on data governance and security.
Session 3, titled “Public-Private Partnership Innovation Model from Data Sovereignty Perspective,” commenced with opening remarks from Bilel Jamoussi (ITU Standardization Bureau) and included valuable insights from Anuradha Rao (PANFISH Solutions), Laura Kiviharju (Data Protection & AI), Farhan Chawla (SenseApplied), Lola Olukuewu (AIVIRA.ai), and Colin C. James (Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority).
In Session 4, “Data Rights Reconstruction and Distribution,” experts joined forces, including Lindsey DeWitt Prat (Bold Insight), Michael Che Bugembe (International Organization for Migration), Nakul Jain (Wadhwani AI), Vuk Vegezzi (Visium), Johannes Wedenig (UNICEF), and Fatia Hassouni (UNHCR).
The day culminated with Session 5, “Data Security and Value Sharing in the Digital Era,” which started with remarks from Firman Freaddy Busroh (Sumpah Pemuda) and showcased contributions from Simon Kriss (simonkriss.ai), Roland Fadrany (Gaia-X), Akash Mehta (Fable & Mane), Raashika Adam (Bionuclex Research), and Mirza Ćutuk (InnoBoost SA).
One particularly impressive highlight came from Lola Olukuewu, who introduced an acronym encapsulating the day’s significant themes:
- Accelerate implementation of basic regulations
- Integrate regulations into curriculums
- Facilitate public and private sector development
- Organize symposiums and research projects
- Develop AI workforce and infrastructure
The afternoon sessions underscored AIFOD’s dedication to promoting equitable and inclusive AI development on a global scale, uniting a variety of viewpoints from international organizations, tech companies, humanitarian agencies, and research institutions to confront the intricate challenges of AI development in the Global South.
