Unveiling Insights: AIFOD Winter Summit Morning Sessions – Opening Ceremony & Strategic Framework Dialogues

The AI for Developing Countries Forum (AIFOD) kicked off its Winter Summit at the United Nations Office in Geneva on January 27th, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing global dialogue surrounding AI governance. The summit attracted a crowd of over 600 representatives from nations across the globe, filling the vibrant Qatar Hall.

The day commenced with impactful opening speeches from three esteemed leaders. AIFOD Chair Tianze Zhang underscored the crucial crossroads humanity faces in the realm of AI development, reaffirming AIFOD’s dedication to fostering equal and open dialogue within its extensive network of 150 countries and 5,000 members. He highlighted AIFOD’s integral role as a bridge between businesses looking to enter the market responsibly and public sectors eager for technical know-how. Following him, Andrea Jacobs delivered an inspiring address, focusing on the importance of ensuring that the transformative potential of AI serves the interests of all humanity. The opening ceremony was capped off with a keynote speech by His Excellency E. P. Chet Greene, the Foreign Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, who articulated his vision for AI development in a swiftly changing global landscape.

The morning continued with two enlightening sessions. The first, titled “AI for Inclusive Global Partnership and Model Frameworks,” boasted a lineup of notable speakers, including Larry J. Keating from NPC DataGuard, Joy-Marie King, the International Trade Director for Antigua and Barbuda’s Foreign Affairs, Wendy O’Brien from UNODC, Xiaobing Tang, a former Senior Counsellor at the WTO, and WHO representative Tania Cernuschi.

The second session, “Frameworks for Responsible AI Governance,” commenced with remarks from WTO Deputy Director-General Johanna Hill and featured contributions from Dominik Galkowski of Kubas Kos Gałkowski, Komes Chandavimol of KBTG, Victor Ndiege from Kenya Climate Ventures, Hesti Aryani representing JANZZ, and Ed Watal from Intellibus.
