dismantling barriers: Uniting AI Research for Positive Change

AI for Good Global Summit Workshop

A Comprehensive Workshop at the AI for Good Global Summit to Cultivate Meaningful AI Solutions

By Amir Banifatemi and Georgina Curto

Recent developments in AI research reveal a transformative shift from mere technological evolution towards crafting AI solutions that yield substantial societal benefits. The AI community is increasingly committed to leveraging AI to advance vital global initiatives such as improving the quality of education, eradicating poverty, and tackling climate change.

However, despite these commendable efforts, the actual outcomes of AI for Good projects have fallen short of their significant potential. There are considerable barriers that hinder collaboration between technical researchers and development practitioners.

Creating collaborative networks focused on foundational topics and applied fields—such as healthcare diagnostics and climate modeling—could help unify and amplify our actions.

Closing the divide between theoretical AI innovations and real-world community benefits is essential for ensuring that advancements are not only relevant but also respectful. Promoting research in areas like resource distribution analytics and AI-powered energy solutions can catalyze a pathway to sustainable and scalable social impact. Additionally, addressing data-related challenges will facilitate a shift in AI research from theoretical realms to innovative practices that drive change.

At the AI for Good Global Summit, participants will engage in a dynamic one-day workshop, featuring insights from a diverse group of multidisciplinary and multilateral speakers. Attendees will:

  • Gain knowledge on the cutting-edge opportunities and challenges faced in AI design for the public good.
  • Collaboratively discuss and develop frameworks and incentives that promote a unified approach to AI for Good initiatives, bridging the gap from research to real-world applications.
  • Identify actionable next steps to expedite the development and implementation of impactful, scalable, and sustainable AI research projects dedicated to the public good.

Cooperation among academia, technology companies, nonprofit organizations, and governmental entities is vital for serving the Public Good. Yet, these sectors often function in silos with differing agendas, lacking integration with the communities they intend to support, which compromises sustainability. Research areas focused on algorithmic fairness, robust machine learning, and explainable AI could greatly enhance social good initiatives.

The journey to merge AI with social good projects is intricate, necessitating not only technical breakthroughs but also a comprehensive, inclusive approach that honors and engages local communities. This workshop endeavors to navigate these complexities and collectively develop a strategic plan for AI research that is both impactful and sustainable.
