Meta Elevates AI Innovation with Open Source Llama 3 Language Model
Meta Raises the Bar with Open Source Llama 3 LLM
Meta has unveiled Llama 3, the latest iteration of its open-source large language model (LLM). The company asserts that Llama 3 sets new standards in performance, exceeding the capabilities of renowned models such as GPT-3.5 in real-world applications.
“With Llama 3, we aimed to create the finest open models that rival the best proprietary models currently available,” Meta stated in a blog post about the launch. The initial models released include versions with 8 billion and 70 billion parameters. Meta is also in the process of training even larger models, exceeding 400 billion parameters, which are expected to be released in the coming months, accompanied by detailed research papers.
Over the last two years, the development of Llama 3 has involved significant investment in acquiring high-quality training data, enhancing distributed training, optimizing model architecture, and utilizing innovative instruction fine-tuning techniques. Notably, Meta’s 70 billion parameter instruction fine-tuned model outperformed not only GPT-3.5 but also Claude and other similarly scaled LLMs in human evaluations across twelve critical usage scenarios, including coding, reasoning, and creative writing. The 8 billion parameter pre-trained model also achieved impressive results on established LLM evaluation benchmarks, affirming Meta’s claim: “We believe these are the best open-source models in their category.”
In an effort to promote an open ecosystem around AI development, Meta is adopting an “open by default” strategy for Llama 3. The models will be accessible through major cloud providers, model hosts, hardware manufacturers, and AI platforms.
Victor Botev, CTO and co-founder of Iris.ai, commented, “With the global shift towards AI regulation, the launch of Meta’s Llama 3 model is significant. By embracing transparency through open-sourcing, Meta aligns with the increasing focus on responsible AI practices and ethical development.” He also emphasized that open models not only foster community education but also allow for the scrutiny of various development methodologies, contributing to the evolution of regulations.
Alongside Llama 3, Meta has introduced an updated suite of AI safety tools. This includes the second iteration of Llama Guard for risk classification and CyberSec Eval for potential misuse assessment. A new addition, Code Shield, is designed to filter out insecure code suggestions during inference.
However, Botev cautioned that simply being open-source does not ensure ethical AI. He highlighted that addressing the challenges posed by AI demands a comprehensive approach to issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and societal implications—concerns that are gaining importance in emerging AI regulations worldwide.
Meta champions a “system-level approach” to responsible AI development with Llama 3. While the models have undergone detailed safety assessments, the company stresses that developers should implement their own input/output filtering, tailored to their application requirements.
The consumer-facing product utilizing Llama 3 is Meta AI, which Meta claims is now the leading AI assistant globally, thanks to its new models. This service can be accessed via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the web for a variety of purposes, including productivity, learning, creativity, and general inquiries. Multimodal versions of Meta AI, featuring vision capabilities, are also in development, with an early preview expected for Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Despite the notable advancements represented by Llama 3, skepticism persists within the AI community regarding Meta’s intentions in pursuing an open approach for societal benefit. Nevertheless, following Mistral AI’s recent success with the Mixtral 8x22B, Meta’s introduction of Llama 3 once again highlights the ongoing evolution in the landscape of open-source models.
The bar for openly available LLMs continues to rise. Companies like SAS are making strides to democratize AI, offering packaged models that cater to users of all skill levels.
