Bill Gates Declares AI a Game-Changer but Remains Skeptical About the Metaverse
Bill Gates Calls AI ‘Quite Revolutionary’ While Skeptical of the Metaverse
In a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Bill Gates offered his insights on some of the most talked-about technologies today, expressing a strong belief in the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) while being more cautious about the metaverse. Gates referred to AI as “the big one,” emphasizing its revolutionary nature compared to other technologies like Web3 and the metaverse, which he described as less impactful.
Gates highlighted his interest in generative AI, a subset of AI focused on creating new content, including text, images, and music. He remarked on the impressive advancements in this technology and its expected significant influence on various sectors. Moreover, Gates mentioned his ongoing collaboration with Microsoft, which allows him to keep a close watch on developments in AI.
In the context of the Gates Foundation, he aims to leverage AI for educational tools that assist children in learning mathematics and to provide medical support for individuals in Africa who lack access to healthcare professionals.
Gates had previously expressed more optimism about the metaverse. In his 2021 blog post, he noted his admiration for advancements in spatial audio technology, which contributes to more immersive online meetings by mimicking in-person conversations. He stated that while there was still progress to be made, the technology was nearing a point where it could replicate office interactions effectively.
Microsoft has been actively exploring the metaverse as part of its mission to connect the digital and physical realms. In October, the company announced a partnership with Meta to develop platforms and software aimed at creating immersive experiences for future work and play. According to data from the Work Trend Index, half of the surveyed Gen Z and millennial participants foresee integrating aspects of their work into the metaverse within the next two years.
