AI Project Imagines Deceased Celebrities in Modern Day
A project titled ‘As If Nothing Happened’ utilizes artificial intelligence to envision what iconic celebrities who met premature ends might look like today. Artists are increasingly incorporating AI-driven tools into their creative endeavors. Istanbul-based artist Alper Yesiltas has shared a series of digitally aged images of both past and present public figures.
One of his collections, ‘Young Age(d)’, features well-known individuals such as Greta Thunberg and the often polarizing Justin Bieber. However, his more captivating work, ‘As If Nothing Happened’, presents a reimagining of deceased celebrities.
This intriguing collection includes portrayals of Freddie Mercury, Steve Jobs, and the adored Princess Diana. In a groundbreaking performance at Coachella in 2012, a hologram of the late rapper Tupac Shakur shared the stage with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, showcasing the potential of technology in honoring legacy. Yesiltas’ work gives us a glimpse into what Shakur might look like today.
Combining AI advancements with holographic technology, artists could effectively preserve the legacies of performers who passed away too soon, allowing them to engage with both long-time fans and new audiences alike. Yesiltas’ exhibition is on display at Akbank Sanat as part of ‘Digital Serendipity’ until February 11, 2023.
