Bumble Unveils Open-Source AI Tool for Detecting Inappropriate Content
Bumble Open-Sources Its Lewd-Spotting AI Tool
The dating application Bumble has made its AI tool for identifying inappropriate images publicly available. Introduced in 2019, this tool is designed to protect users from receiving unwanted photos, including not only nudity but also shirtless selfies and images of firearms. When users receive a suspicious image, it becomes blurred, allowing them to choose whether to view, block, or report the sender.
Combating online harassment is a significant challenge, but AI is emerging as an effective means of enhancing user safety, particularly for vulnerable populations. A troubling study from 2020 revealed that 75.8% of girls aged 12 to 18 had received unsolicited nude images. Bumble’s decision to open-source its AI tool aims to extend this protection to a broader audience. The company stated in a blog post, “It’s our hope that the feature will be adopted by the wider tech community as we work in tandem to make the internet a safer place.”
Human moderators often face overwhelming challenges, regularly encountering distressing content such as abuse and violence, which can deeply affect their mental health. Consequently, this line of work is associated with a high suicide rate and often necessitates therapy. While AI moderation can assist, it is not flawless; for instance, human moderators are essential for comprehending context, differentiating between content that documents war crimes and that which promotes hate and violence.
The AI tool from Bumble is intended to ease the burden on human moderators by blurring harmful content while complementing the capability of human judgment. In its blog post, Bumble elaborated on the development of the tool, mentioning the implementation of an EfficientNetv2-based binary classifier. This convolutional network is optimized for performance and efficiency, utilizing advanced architectural designs to enhance training speed and reduce parameters.
According to Bumble, the tool achieves “world-class performance,” boasting over 98% accuracy in various settings. The AI tool can be accessed on GitHub, licensed under the Apache License, allowing anyone to implement it as is or customize it with additional training data.
