The widely used AI development framework, PyTorch, has officially launched an independent foundation aimed at promoting the advancement of AI tools. This new PyTorch Foundation will operate under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, featuring a governing board made up of representatives from prominent tech companies, including AMD, Microsoft Azure, NVIDIA, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Meta.

Mark Zuckerberg, the Founder and CEO of Meta, expressed his enthusiasm for the new venture: “The new PyTorch Foundation board will include many of the AI leaders who’ve helped get the community where it is today, including Meta and our partners at AMD, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia. I’m excited to keep building the PyTorch community and advancing AI research.”

Over the upcoming year, Meta plans to smoothly transition the PyTorch framework from its company structure to the new foundation. According to a blog post from Meta, collaboration has been key to the framework’s development since its inception six years ago. With approximately 2,400 contributors who have developed over 150,000 projects using PyTorch, it has emerged as a leading platform for both AI research and commercial applications.

Interest in PyTorch has surged in recent years. Historically dominated by Google’s TensorFlow, interest began shifting towards PyTorch around 2020. Recent Google Trends data shows that PyTorch is now surpassing TensorFlow in popularity, especially in the past year.
