Rob Mellor: ETL tools are primarily server-based solutions designed for data integration, facilitating the transfer and manipulation of data between sources and target data warehouses. When ETL tools were first developed over forty years ago, databases lacked the computational power they possess today. Hence, ETL solutions were created to ease data processing burdens, offering enhanced database and application connectivity along with data manipulation capabilities that were limited in earlier database engines.

Today, some vendors adopt an ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) approach, where data transformation occurs directly in the target data warehouse, bypassing the need for a middle-tier ETL server. This method leverages modern database engines capable of massive parallel processing (MPP) and is well-suited for cloud-based platforms like Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, and Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse.

While ELT marks an improvement over ETL, both types of data movement solutions address only a fraction of the data warehousing lifecycle. Therefore, organizations often rely on multiple disparate tools to manage the various aspects associated with designing, developing, deploying, documenting, and maintaining their data warehouses and infrastructures. In contrast, data infrastructure automation encompasses the entire data warehousing lifecycle, covering everything from planning and design to operations and documentation.

Rob Mellor: The extensive capabilities of data automation tools across the data warehousing lifecycle lead us to hear numerous reasons from companies eager to adopt them. Common motivations include efforts by small to medium-sized businesses to standardize their current data warehouse setups and effectively scale their operations. Many of these businesses begin with custom solutions, which often result in a lack of accessible knowledge limited to a single individual, complicating data democratization among colleagues, particularly non-technical staff.
