Unique Solutions Offered by VISUA
Luca Boschin shared that since its establishment in 2016, VISUA has leveraged Visual-AI, also known as computer vision or vision AI, across various applications. Initially focused on brand monitoring, VISUA processes vast amounts of images and videos monthly to detect brand occurrences, whether through logos in images or mentions in videos.
VISUA’s technology goes beyond just identifying brands like Budweiser in images; it analyzes contextual data, answering questions such as the frequency of brand appearances alongside food or during specific events like a football game. Recently, the company has tailored its technology for specialized tasks, including sponsorship monitoring in live feeds, counterfeit detection, copyright infringement, and digital piracy tracking, along with visual authentication of holograms and identifying graphical attack vectors in phishing scams.
Recent Developments at VISUA
One of VISUA’s significant advancements is the addition of holographic authentication, developed in collaboration with De La Rue. Holograms have transformed brand protection by enabling brands to offer visible proof of authenticity. However, the rise in popularity of holograms has led to the emergence of counterfeit versions that are nearly indistinguishable without expert training. De La Rue sought a solution, and after evaluating various offerings, they partnered with VISUA to create a system that allows users to authenticate holograms swiftly using a smartphone.
Moreover, VISUA is making strides in cybersecurity, particularly in combating phishing attacks. As malicious actors increasingly employ AI to complicate detection, VISUA’s Visual-AI provides critical data and early warnings, enabling platforms and intelligence services to pinpoint and isolate suspicious emails and websites for further scrutiny.
Future Plans for VISUA
Looking ahead, Boschin highlighted the company’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity measures, especially in addressing the rising threat of graphical attack vectors. VISUA is collaborating with multiple firms to refine their capability to detect and neutralize malicious content. Additionally, the company is exploring various verticals to determine the most promising opportunities, recognizing the challenge of distinguishing the best paths forward amidst numerous possibilities.
Current Trends in the AI Industry
Boschin noted that many organizations often underestimate the intricacies involved in computer vision technology. While major companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon provide impressive computer vision APIs, these tools frequently lack the adaptability needed for specific applications or require substantial expertise for implementation.
While they may appear to be straightforward solutions, what’s truly at work are complex frameworks that allow you to shape these basic building blocks tailored for your system. From the outset, we made a conscious decision not to operate as an API company, and there’s a solid rationale behind this. It’s relatively simple to create a prototype using readily available tools. This prototype gets presented to the board, who enthusiastically greenlights mass production. However, this is typically where challenges arise, as scaling computer vision systems to ensure they are both accurate and cost-efficient is quite difficult.
Many clients have attempted to take this challenge on themselves. A year down the line, after considerable budget expenditure and missed opportunities, they often realize their mistake and come to us for assistance. Within just a few weeks, they are running effectively! Companies that focus solely on APIs generally fail to provide adequate support. If you require assistance, it usually means purchasing an expensive support package or hiring a consultancy firm. Even then, if project parameters and briefs have not been clearly defined, issues can escalate quickly.
Recognizing this early on, we chose to break the mold. We understood that businesses were eager to implement Visual-AI but often lacked comprehensive briefs. Sometimes, they weren’t even sure what questions they needed to ask to formulate these briefs. That’s where we step in. As experts in Visual-AI, we guide these initiatives toward success. While our primary focus is not consultancy, we recognized that this kind of guidance was just as crucial as providing access to our API.
