AUKUS Trial Advances AI for Military Operations

The UK armed forces, in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), have partnered with the military forces of Australia and the US through the AUKUS initiative. They recently conducted a significant trial centered on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. This initiative, known as Trusted Operation of Robotic Vehicles in Contested Environments (TORVICE), was executed in Australia and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of robotic vehicles and sensors in scenarios involving electronic attacks, GPS disruptions, and other potential threats.

The resilience of these autonomous systems is crucial, as they are expected to play a vital role in future military operations. Understanding how to ensure reliable operation amid contemporary electronic warfare and cyber threats is essential before these technologies see broader implementation.

The TORVICE trial involved US and British autonomous vehicles performing reconnaissance missions, while Australian units simulated electronic attacks on their systems. The data collected during the trial will be instrumental in reinforcing the safeguards necessary to prevent system failures or disruptions. According to Guy Powell, Dstl’s technical authority for the trial, “The TORVICE trial aims to understand the capabilities of robotic and autonomous systems to operate in contested environments. We need to understand how robust these systems are when subject to attack.”

This trial builds upon the first AUKUS autonomous systems test held in April 2023 in the UK and marks progress following the December announcement by AUKUS defense ministers about integrating Resilient and Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Technologies (RAAIT) into the military forces of the three nations starting in 2024.

Lt Col Russ Atherton, a military advisor at Dstl, mentioned that effectively utilizing AI and autonomy could be a “game-changer” that minimizes risks to soldiers. The technology is anticipated to handle vital tasks such as sensor operations and logistics across broader areas. “The ability to deploy different payloads such as sensors and logistics across a larger battlespace will give commanders greater options than currently exist,” explained Lt Atherton.

The AUKUS allies’ collaborative efforts aim to expedite advancements in this pivotal new area of warfare, enhancing interoperability among their forces, leveraging their expertise, and bolstering deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region. As AUKUS continues to deepen its cooperation in cutting-edge military technologies, this partnership promises to significantly enhance military capabilities while mitigating risks for service members.
