Chinese Universities Introduce DeepSeek AI Courses to Empower Future Innovators
Chinese universities are introducing artificial intelligence courses inspired by the innovative startup DeepSeek. In January, DeepSeek made headlines in the West by launching an AI model that rivals ChatGPT in capability but operates at a significantly lower cost.
Shenzhen University, located in Guangdong province, has announced the launch of an AI course centered around DeepSeek’s technology. This program aims to educate students on crucial technological advancements, addressing issues such as security, privacy, and other challenges associated with artificial intelligence. This initiative aligns with the Chinese government’s objective to enhance scientific and technological innovation in educational institutions, which could help in generating new growth opportunities.
The university stated that the course will “explore how to find a balance between technological innovation and ethical norms.”
Furthermore, three additional universities have confirmed to Reuters that they will incorporate DeepSeek’s technology into their own academic offerings, as Chinese authorities increasingly emphasize growth in the tech sector. On Monday, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping held a rare meeting with key figures from the tech industry, encouraging them to “show their talent” and to embrace confidence in China’s model and market.
According to analysts, this meeting indicates the Chinese government’s awareness of its technological competition with the United States. Christopher Beddor, deputy China research director at Gavekal Dragonomics in Hong Kong, noted, “It’s a tacit acknowledgment that the Chinese government needs private-sector firms for its tech rivalry with the United States.”
