Dell, Intel, and the University of Cambridge have collaborated to launch the Dawn Phase 1 supercomputer, which is now recognized as the fastest AI supercomputer in the UK. This innovative system represents a significant amalgamation of AI capabilities and high-performance computing (HPC), aimed at addressing some of the globe’s most urgent challenges.
Serving as a key part of the newly established UK AI Research Resource (AIRR), the Dawn Phase 1 symbolizes the UK’s dedication to advancing pioneering systems and architectures. It brings the nation one step closer to reaching exascale computing—a milestone defined as achieving a quintillion (1018) floating-point operations per second. To illustrate this scale, it equates to the total number of calculations that the global population would perform continuously for over four years.
Hosted at the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab, the Dawn supercomputer utilizes Dell PowerEdge XE9640 servers, which serve as a robust platform for the Intel Data Center GPU Max Series accelerator. This synergy cultivates a varied ecosystem powered by oneAPI, enhancing adaptability and choice.
The system’s prowess extends into multiple sectors including healthcare, engineering, green fusion energy, climate modeling, cosmology, and high-energy physics. Adam Roe, EMEA HPC Technical Director at Intel, stated, “Dawn considerably enhances the scientific and AI computing power available in the UK, and it’s operational at the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab. Dell PowerEdge XE9640 servers provide a no-compromise platform for the Intel accelerator, paving the way for diverse options through oneAPI.”
Looking ahead, Dawn Phase 1 is more than just a standalone success; it’s part of a strategic vision. The partnership aims to unveil a Phase 2 supercomputer in 2024 that will potentially deliver ten times the performance of its predecessor, significantly advancing the UK’s AI capabilities and reinforcing industry collaboration.
The technical architecture of the supercomputer benefits from Dell’s PowerEdge XE9640 servers, which are recognized for their adaptable configurations and efficient liquid cooling technology. This design not only handles AI and HPC workloads more effectively than traditional air-cooled systems but also ensures optimal performance.
