Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom Team Up to Develop Telco-Specific Large Language Model
Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom Partner on Telco-Focused LLM
SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have formally entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) aimed at creating a specialized Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for telecommunications companies. This significant agreement was officiated during a ceremony at the SK Seorin Building in Seoul, concluding discussions that began with the Global Telco AI Alliance, a consortium established in July 2023, which also includes E& and Singtel.
This groundbreaking partnership seeks to develop a telco-specific LLM that will enable telecom operators worldwide to quickly and effectively build generative AI models. Emphasizing multilingual support—covering German, English, and Korean—this LLM aims to improve customer service capabilities, particularly in areas such as AI-driven contact centers.
Claudia Nemat, a member of the Board of Management for Technology and Innovation at Deutsche Telekom, remarked, “AI shows impressive potential to significantly enhance human problem-solving capabilities. To maximize its use, especially in customer service, we need to adapt existing large language models and train them with our unique data. This will elevate our generative AI tools.”
The collaboration also involves prominent AI industry players, including Anthropic (Claude 2) and Meta (Llama2), facilitating the joint development of an advanced LLM. This new telco-focused model is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2024 and will provide a more profound understanding of telecommunication services and customer intentions than existing general LLMs.
A key aim of this venture is to support telecom companies globally in creating adaptable generative AI services, including AI agents. By streamlining the process for implementing AI-driven solutions such as contact centers, telecoms can reduce costs, save time, and explore new opportunities for business growth and innovation.
Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, stated, “Through our partnership with Deutsche Telekom, we have secured a strong opportunity and momentum to gain global AI leadership and drive new growth. By combining the strengths and capabilities of the two companies in AI technology, platform, and infrastructure, we expect to empower enterprises in various industries to deliver new and higher value to their customers.”
This alliance is a timely response to the growing demand for AI solutions in the telecommunications sector, heralding a transformative shift in the traditional telecom landscape. This announcement follows SK Telecom’s $100 million investment in Anthropic made in August.
