Duolingo Embraces AI-Driven Evolution, Streamlining Workforce and Eliminating Contractor Positions
Duolingo Transitions to an AI-First Strategy, Reducing Contractor Roles
Duolingo is undergoing a significant restructuring as it pivots towards becoming an “AI-first” company. This strategic shift was detailed in an internal memo from CEO and co-founder Luis von Ahn, which was later made public on the company’s LinkedIn page. The memo outlines key changes aimed at enhancing operations through the integration of artificial intelligence to simplify processes, minimize manual tasks, and accelerate content creation.
As part of this transition, Duolingo plans to phase out contractor roles where AI can fulfill those responsibilities. The company will also start assessing job candidates and current employee performance based on their proficiency with AI tools. Von Ahn mentioned that growth in workforce numbers will only be considered once a team can no longer efficiently automate aspects of their work.
“Being AI-first means we will need to rethink much of how we work. Making minor tweaks to systems designed for humans won’t get us there,” he stated. Von Ahn emphasized that to effectively teach languages, a substantial amount of content is needed, which manual methods cannot provide at scale.
A major reason for this shift is the need for rapid content production. Von Ahn pointed out that creating new content manually could take decades. By utilizing AI, Duolingo aims to make previously slow processes more efficient and automated. The incorporation of AI has enabled the development of innovative features, including an AI-driven video call function intended to offer tutoring comparable to human instructors. According to Von Ahn, such tools bring Duolingo closer to its mission of providing accessible language instruction globally.
This internal transformation is not confined to content creation or product development; Von Ahn noted that most business functions will need to reassess their operations to find ways to incorporate AI into everyday tasks. Teams are encouraged to adopt “constructive constraints”—guidelines that urge them to prioritize automation before seeking additional resources.
This strategy mirrors a broader trend within the tech sector. For instance, Shopify’s CEO Tobi Lütke has similarly encouraged employees to justify any tasks requiring new hires by demonstrating the potential for AI to accomplish those tasks. Both companies are setting new standards on how teams approach growth in an AI-driven landscape.
Duolingo’s leadership emphasizes that these changes are not intended to undermine employee well-being. The company remains committed to providing staff with training, mentorship, and tools to help them navigate the new workflows. The aim is not to replace employees with AI, but rather to remove obstacles and allow staff to focus on more complex or creative tasks. “AI isn’t just a productivity boost,” Von Ahn explained. “It helps us get closer to our mission.”
The company’s shift toward automation reflects a belief that delaying the embrace of AI could result in missed opportunities. Von Ahn referenced Duolingo’s early commitment to mobile-first design in 2012 as a pivotal decision that enhanced its visibility and user engagement, culminating in its recognition as Apple’s iPhone App of the Year in 2013. The choice to embrace an “AI-first” approach is framed as another progressive step.
While the full transition is anticipated to take time, Von Ahn acknowledged that not all systems are ready for complete automation, particularly in complex areas like codebase analysis. However, he asserted the importance of moving swiftly, even amid possible setbacks, rather than waiting for technology to reach full maturity.
By centering AI in its business model, Duolingo aims to provide more scalable learning experiences and optimize internal resource management. The company is committed to offering further updates as the implementation of these changes unfolds.
