Ebuyer Insights Uncover Growing Public Concerns About AI Technology
Research Insights on Public Concerns About AI
Ebuyer recently conducted an extensive analysis revealing that over 2.9 million negative discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) surfaced online in the past year. By utilizing data from platforms such as Google Search Trends, Linkfluence, and Answer the Public, the tech retailer has provided a breakdown of public sentiments towards AI based on demographics including region, age, and other variables. Key inquiries included “can artificial intelligence be dangerous?” and “will AI take over the world?”
The United States recorded the highest engagement, generating over 12 million posts related to AI. Within these conversations, natural language processing was a leading topic with 130,000 discussions, closely followed by machine learning with 127,000 mentions. Political themes also contributed significantly, with a notable spike of 230,000 conversations tied to former President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, India and the UK followed as the second and third countries, producing 2.36 million and 1.27 million discussions respectively. Interestingly, while the sentiment in the US leaned predominantly negative regarding AI, both India and the UK displayed a more favorable view of its applications.
When examining generational attitudes towards AI, Ebuyer found that Generation Z was the most vocal group, representing 30% of the discussions, with individuals aged 18-24 leading the conversation. Baby boomers contributed significantly as well, making up 20% of the discussions. Notably, female members of Generation Z accounted for 17% of all conversations and expressed more positive sentiments. Conversely, millennials and baby boomers demonstrated the most skepticism towards AI. Over the past year, millennials made 25% of negative posts about AI, as opposed to just 12% positive ones, while baby boomers had a ratio of 27% positive to 9% negative. These generational trends illustrate a clear divide, with Generation Z, who are digital natives, exhibiting enthusiasm for technology, while baby boomers show a more cautious approach. The heavy negativity from millennials, however, stands out as Ebuyer’s most surprising finding.
