England’s Teachers Embrace AI Innovations in the Classroom

Teachers in England Given Green Light to Use AI
Teachers in England are now authorized to employ AI for assistance with low-level tasks associated with their roles, according to reports from the BBC. The Department for Education (DfE) has issued guidance permitting school staff to use AI predominantly for ‘low stakes’ activities like writing letters to parents and grading homework.
This decision follows a survey conducted in 2023, which indicated that a significant portion of teachers surveyed felt “broadly optimistic” about the integration of AI in their work. A representative from Teacher Tap, the organization responsible for the survey, highlighted that many math teachers no longer personally mark homework due to severe staffing shortages. This shift appears to be widely accepted among educators.
Teachers reported finding AI especially useful for obtaining relevant teaching materials and composing performance reports about students for their parents. The DfE believes that leveraging AI can significantly alleviate the amount of unpaid overtime teachers typically endure, contributing to better work-life balance and increased job satisfaction.
By authorizing the use of AI tools, the government aims to improve the statistics regarding teachers’ mental health. According to the charity Education Support, 36% of teachers have faced burnout. It is hoped that streamlining administrative duties with AI will attract more graduates into the teaching profession.
The daily challenges many educators face stem from a shortage of qualified teachers, exacerbated by population growth in the UK. While there are more teachers employed now than ten years ago, the ratio of students to teachers continues to rise, with many classes containing over 33 students. Indeed, more than a million students are currently taught in classes exceeding 30.
The attrition rate for qualified teachers in the UK stands at about 8.8%, as noted by SecEd, an industry-focused website for secondary school educators. Additionally, open vacancies in the teaching sector surged from three to six per 1,000 teachers within the year following 2022.
Many open teaching positions are filled through short-term supply teachers due to financial constraints on schools. This practice typically incurs higher costs compared to employing permanent staff.
The recent announcement also included a note on the Education Hub blog, stating that teachers can utilize AI for planning lessons, generating resources, grading work, providing feedback, and managing administrative duties. However, it’s emphasized that teachers must verify the accuracy and appropriateness of AI-generated content, retaining ultimate responsibility for its use.
Moreover, the DfE has endorsed the incorporation of AI by companies conducting curriculum and assessment reviews of UK schools, despite some opposition from teaching unions. This use of AI plays a role in determining school rankings in the often-discussed league tables provided by Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education), which classify schools as ‘special measures’, ‘good’, or ‘outstanding’.
While integrating technology in education may ease administrative workloads for teachers, it remains to be seen whether this will sufficiently address the long-standing issues stemming from chronic underfunding in the sector. The NAHT (National Association of Head Teachers) reports that school capital spending experienced a 29% inflation-adjusted reduction from the 2009-10 to 2021-2022 school years. Additionally, the Institute for Fiscal Studies noted a 9% decrease in real-term spending per pupil during the same period.
The characterization of homework as ‘low stakes,’ as described by the Department for Education, is open to debate. While increasing the education budget for school-age children can be quite costly, subscriptions to AI tools can often be obtained for just a few dollars monthly. On the surface, the prospect of AI easing teachers’ workloads must seem appealing to officials at the DfE. However, it is clear that subsequent UK governments have consistently undervalued childhood education.
The decision to incorporate AI assistance in an education sector plagued by chronic underfunding is largely insignificant, and it is unlikely to enhance the educational quality for yet another generation of English children.
