AI News: What are the constraints, ethical considerations, and potential for deep reinforcement learning?
Janine Lloyd-Jones: While reinforcement learning proves useful in areas like gaming, robotics, and chatbots, we cannot fully harness these capabilities due to significant risks and maintenance challenges associated with these models. As AI increasingly influences critical decisions in our lives, ensuring its safe operation becomes more crucial. We have developed an innovative explainability tool that quickly generates explanations, incorporating causal relationships, thereby facilitating model performance improvements. This tool has been vital for our Early Warning System (EWS), enabling NHS staff to interpret forecasts effectively and enhancing the adoption of the tool.
The Need for Regulation
We believe clearer regulations are essential for the safe use of AI, guided by what is feasible to implement without hampering innovation. Regulations must be context-specific; for instance, safety is paramount when AI impacts medical diagnostics, unlike a scenario where it decides which advertisement to display. As we evolve our tools and regulations, it is thrilling to anticipate the transformative capabilities of complex AI, such as deep reinforcement learning, in our industry and society.
AI’s Role in Combating Climate Change
AI News: Faculty is taking commendable steps to lower its carbon footprint. How can AI contribute to addressing climate change?
Janine Lloyd-Jones: We are committed to leveraging AI to tackle significant global issues. Similar to other tech firms, our substantial carbon emissions originate from cloud computing, which surpasses that of the aviation sector. Nonetheless, sustainable AI can offer solutions. Our initiatives include data analysis for Arctic Basecamp and regulating pressures on the UK gas grid. We are enhancing our collaboration with environmental organizations to combat climate change using AI.
The Future of Automation in Factories
AI News: How quickly do you believe factories will either become “dark” with minimal human oversight or achieve substantial autonomy? How should the workforce prepare for this shift?
Janine Lloyd-Jones: AI has yet to become ubiquitous, so fully autonomous factories are not imminent. Most businesses utilize AI to increase efficiency and improve productivity. The potential of AI is enormous and will reshape industries. It can become the organization’s subconscious, swiftly processing vast amounts of data, thereby allowing humans to concentrate on tasks requiring their unique insights and understanding.
Partnership Successes with the NHS
AI News: The NHS improved its forecasting capabilities through its collaboration with Faculty. What successes were achieved, and what insights were gained to enhance future predictions?
Janine Lloyd-Jones: We take great pride in our partnership with the NHS. Our pioneering Early Warning System (EWS) played a vital role in the NHS’s nationwide pandemic strategy, allowing for advance forecasting of Covid-19 case spikes and hospital admissions. These forecasts were instrumental in ensuring adequate staffing, bed availability, and essential resources during critical times.
Faculty’s AI model has gained traction, currently utilized by over 1000 users within the NHS. Following the successful implementation of this tool, we are exploring additional areas where AI forecasting can enhance service delivery and patient care. This includes predicting demand for A&E services and managing winter pressures. Our Early Warning System (EWS) employs our Operational Intelligence software, utilizing Bayesian hierarchical modeling to generate forecasts that range from a national scale down to individual trusts. This software has also proven effective in demand forecasting across various scenarios, including consumer goods.
Recently, Faculty has experienced rapid growth, securing £30 million in funding, projected to create 400 new jobs and speed up international expansion. We aim to empower more customers with AI, enabling them to make impactful real-world decisions. Enhancements to our technology, coupled with recruitment efforts, will play a pivotal role in our future strategy. Additionally, we are intensifying our focus on AI safety research to ensure that our AI models operate safely and efficiently.
At this year’s AI Expo Global, we are eager to reconnect face-to-face with fellow exhibitors and attendees. Our exhibit will highlight our Customer Intelligence software, which is primarily used in consumer sectors to showcase how marketing influences customer behavior. A significant portion of marketing budgets is wasted on ineffective targeting. Our technology equips marketers with insights to focus their efforts more appropriately.
We will also present our Faculty Fellowship, an in-house learning and development initiative where organizations can engage top data scientists for six weeks prior to making hiring decisions. This program is especially vital considering the increasing demand for talent in the UK tech industry. Notable companies, including Virgin Media and Vodafone, have already participated, along with leading startups like The Trade Desk and JustEat.
October marks the 20th anniversary of the Faculty Fellowship, a cherished milestone for us. With a soaring demand for data scientists — exceeding 100,000 vacancies in 2020 — we have expanded the program this year to include an additional fellowship. Our ongoing efforts are geared toward attracting top talent and simplifying the hiring process for partner firms. The fellowship is designed to require only 2-3 hours of investment from companies, allowing them to embed an elite data scientist into their teams rapidly.
