This year, we’re rolling out new features on our digital platforms utilizing IBM’s cutting-edge AI technology, which enables fans to gain deeper insights into the singles draw and access commentary on an expanded range of matches through match highlights videos.”

AI Commentary

The AI commentary feature, created in partnership with IBM iX, allows fans watching match highlight videos to receive audio commentary along with captions detailing key moments. This tool is designed to enhance the viewing experience for those catching up on matches via the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com. This rollout represents progress towards providing commentary for matches beyond Wimbledon’s Show Courts, which already host live human commentary.

IBM iX experts collaborated with The All England Club to train the AI using foundation models from IBM’s enterprise AI and data platform, watsonx. The generative AI integrated into this feature delivers narration that varies in sentence structure and vocabulary, making the recap clips more informative and engaging.

AI Draw Analysis

Another groundbreaking addition this year is the AI draw analysis feature, marking a first in the tennis world. This innovative tool utilizes AI to assess a player’s path to the finals in the singles draw, taking into account factors like match-ups against potential opponents and their standings compared to competitors. This unique perspective enables tennis fans to discover anomalies and surprises within the singles draw that may not be visible through rankings alone, fostering deeper discussions and engagement among the fan community.

Jonathan Adashek, SVP of Marketing and Communications for IBM, stated, “Through the innovative tools powered by foundation models and generative AI from watsonx, IBM is delivering new dimensions of insight and engagement to the 2023 Championships. We’ve observed that these technologies can significantly enhance major sporting events like Wimbledon, expanding their audiences through exceptional digital experiences.” He added that the AI and data platform utilized for these fan experiences mirrors the technology IBM applies to facilitate business transformations across various industries.

These new features complement the existing AI tools found on the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com, which include the IBM Power Index Leaderboard, IBM Match Insights, and Personalized Highlights Reels and Recommendations. These resources leverage IBM’s Watson AI to analyze over 100,000 data points from each shot throughout the tournament, providing fans with rich insights into players, opponents, and potential outcomes. Regular updates and customized insights keep fans engaged throughout the event.
