The Detroit Police Department (DPD) is facing fresh scrutiny as a new lawsuit reveals the wrongful arrest of an innocent individual due to faulty facial recognition technology. Porcha Woodruff, an African American woman who was eight months pregnant at the time, has come forward as the sixth person to report being falsely accused of a crime linked to this controversial technology. Accused of robbery and carjacking, Woodruff expressed disbelief, highlighting her pregnancy to emphasize the absurdity of the allegation.
This case adds to a troubling trend of wrongful arrests stemming from erroneous facial recognition matches, with all known victims reported by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) being African Americans. Notably, Woodruff’s situation is significant as she is the first woman to document such an incident. This incident represents the third known case of wrongful arrest associated with the DPD and its reliance on unreliable facial recognition technology in the last three years.
Robert Williams, represented by the ACLU of Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School’s Civil Rights Litigation Initiative (CRLI), is currently pursuing legal action against the DPD for his wrongful arrest in January 2020, also due to flawed technology. Phil Mayor, Senior Staff Attorney at ACLU of Michigan, expressed grave concerns: “It’s deeply troubling that the Detroit Police Department recognizes the harmful consequences of using inadequate facial recognition technology yet continues to rely on it.” He emphasizes the need to end the Department’s use of such technology.
The use of facial recognition in law enforcement remains highly controversial, with increasing concerns about its accuracy, racial bias, and implications for privacy and civil liberties. Research indicates that these systems often struggle to accurately identify individuals with darker skin tones, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. Mayor added, “The DPD continues to conceal its misuse of the technology, leaving individuals whose rights have been violated to fight for justice one case at a time.
