Google’s AI Reservation Service Duplex Expands to 49 States

Google has rolled out its AI-driven reservation service, Duplex, to 49 states throughout the United States. This service must adhere to varying privacy regulations by state, and as it ventures beyond the US, it will need to comply with additional national laws.

The delay in Duplex’s US rollout was attributed to the need for adjustments in response to legislative changes and state-specific features, such as mandatory call-back numbers in certain areas. Initially announced in May 2018, the service elicited both fascination and concern due to its strikingly human-like interaction style, complete with natural speech patterns, which raised alarms about potential misuse, including automation in fraudulent activities.

In response to public concern, Duplex now identifies itself as a bot before engaging in conversation with users. The goal of this service is to eventually automate routine tasks like scheduling hair appointments or booking restaurant tables. However, it is reported that currently, about 25% of the calls made through Duplex are placed by humans, while an additional 19% require human intervention to complete.
