Google Unveils Gemini: The Next Generation Chatbot Reinventing AI Conversations
Google Unveils Gemini to Supersede Bard Chatbot
In an effort to enhance its AI capabilities, Google has introduced Gemini, an advanced AI chatbot positioned to take over from the previously launched Bard service. Initially presented in December, Bard was intended to rival popular chatbots such as ChatGPT but did not meet expectations during its demonstrations. Internal feedback from Google employees characterized the initial launch as “botched,” leading to criticism of CEO Sundar Pichai.
Now rebranded as Gemini, Google describes this new chatbot as its “most capable family of models” for facilitating natural conversations. Two primary offerings are being launched: Gemini Advanced and a mobile application. Gemini Advanced provides access to Ultra 1.0, which Google promotes as its “largest and most sophisticated state-of-the-art AI model.” In blind assessments, external evaluators found Gemini Advanced more effective than competitors for elaborate tasks involving coding, logical reasoning, and creative collaboration.
This AI tool can function as a tutor, generating personalized lessons and quizzes, and assist developers with challenging coding issues. Gemini Advanced aims to inspire ideas and devise strategies for creators looking to expand their audiences. Over time, Google plans to enhance Gemini Advanced with exclusive features that include expanded multimodal interactions, interactive coding support, deeper data analysis, and more. Currently, it supports English in over 150 countries, with plans to add additional languages shortly.
Access to Gemini Advanced is available through a new Google One AI Premium Plan priced at $19.99 (£18.99) per month, which includes a complimentary two-month trial. Subscribers also receive 2TB of storage and access to the latest Google AI advancements. Google emphasizes that Gemini Advanced underwent rigorous trust and safety evaluations prior to its release, including external reviews aimed at addressing concerns about unsafe content and biases. An updated technical report (PDF) offers further insights.
Additionally, Google has released mobile applications for Android and iOS, allowing users to access essential features of Gemini on the go. Users can seek assistance with images, tasks, and more while they are out. The long-term goal is for Gemini to evolve into a fully-fledged personal AI assistant. Currently, the Gemini mobile apps can be found in the US on Android as a standalone app and within the Google app on iOS, initially supporting English communications. There are plans to expand into Japan and South Korea next week, followed by more countries and languages in the future.
