Google Unveils New Data Centre in the UK to Address Rising AI Demand

Google has announced a substantial investment of $1 billion to establish a new data centre in the UK, aimed at accommodating the increasing demand for its AI and cloud services. Located on a 33-acre site in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, the facility is set to enhance computing capacity for businesses, fostering AI innovations and ensuring stable digital services for users of Google Cloud products, including Search, Maps, and YouTube.

Ruth Porat, Alphabet’s President and CFO, highlighted that this data centre signifies their latest investment in the UK and contributes to the broader digital economy. She noted that it builds upon previous investments, including the development of offices at Saint Giles and King’s Cross, a multi-year research partnership with Cambridge, and the Grace Hopper subsea cable connecting the UK with the US and Spain.

Porat emphasized that the new data centre will not only meet the growing demand for AI and cloud services but also create job opportunities in construction and technical fields within the local community. Recognized for operating some of the most efficient data centres globally, Google has committed to running them entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030. A recent partnership with ENGIE will provide offshore wind energy from Scotland’s Moray West farm, contributing to a target of 90 percent clean energy by 2025.

Additionally, the facility will implement heat recovery systems to benefit local homes and businesses, alongside an innovative air-cooling mechanism. Porat referred to this development as part of a series of investments reaffirming Google’s commitment to the UK and its economy. Previous commitments also include $1 billion for Central Saint Giles office space, a massive King’s Cross campus, and initiatives promoting accessible technology.

The announcement from Google follows Microsoft’s declaration in November of a £2.5 billion data centre in the UK. This investment aims to bolster Microsoft’s infrastructure for AI across various sites, enhancing its capacity to meet the surging demand for sustainable and efficient computational power.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt remarked, “The UK stands as Europe’s tech hub, boasting an ecosystem more valuable than that of Germany and France combined. This investment serves as a significant endorsement of our status as a science superpower.”
