IBM and Hugging Face Release AI Foundation Model for Climate Science

In a significant effort to broaden access to AI technology for climate science, IBM and Hugging Face have unveiled the watsonx.ai geospatial foundation model. This model, constructed using NASA’s satellite data, stands out as the largest of its kind hosted on Hugging Face and represents the first open-source AI foundation model developed in collaboration with NASA.

Jeff Boudier, Head of Product and Growth at Hugging Face, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts and information sharing in advancing AI. He noted that the open-source nature of AI models and datasets is crucial for ensuring that the benefits reach a wide audience. Climate science, in particular, confronts continuous challenges due to shifting environmental conditions, which necessitate access to up-to-date information. Although there is a wealth of data available, scientists and researchers often find it challenging to effectively analyze large datasets. NASA anticipates that by 2024, there will be around 250,000 terabytes of data generated from new missions.

To tackle these challenges, IBM entered into a Space Act Agreement with NASA earlier this year to create an AI foundation model focused on geospatial data. By offering this model openly on Hugging Face, both organizations aim to foster collaboration and speed up advancements in climate and Earth science.

Sriram Raghavan, VP at IBM Research AI, stated, “The critical role of open-source technologies in accelerating discoveries, such as those related to climate change, has never been more evident. By merging IBM’s efforts in creating adaptable AI systems with NASA’s comprehensive Earth-satellite data repository, we can harness the power of collaboration to develop faster, more impactful solutions for our planet.”

This geospatial model, co-trained by IBM and NASA using Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 satellite data over the course of a year in the continental United States, has demonstrated promising outcomes. It achieved a 15 percent improvement over existing state-of-the-art techniques while utilizing only half of the labeled data. With additional fine-tuning, the model can be customized for various applications, including tracking deforestation, predicting crop yields, and detecting greenhouse gases.

IBM’s partnership with NASA in creating the AI model aligns with NASA’s long-standing Open-Source Science Initiative, which promotes a more inclusive and accessible scientific community. This year, 2023, has been designated by NASA and other federal agencies as the Year of Open Science, highlighting the advantages of sharing data and knowledge openly.

Kevin Murphy, Chief Science Data Officer at NASA, remarked, “We believe that foundation models have the potential to transform how observational data is analyzed, enhancing our understanding of the planet. By making such models open-source and globally accessible, we aim to amplify their impact.”

The geospatial model utilizes IBM’s foundational technology and fits within IBM’s larger goal of developing AI models with versatile capabilities across various tasks. In June, IBM unveiled watsonx, an AI and data platform designed to scale and enhance the efficacy of sophisticated AI with reliable data. A commercial version of the geospatial model is set to be incorporated into the IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite (EIS) later this year.

This collaborative effort is aimed at effectively addressing climate challenges and fostering a more sustainable future for our planet.
