IBM Boosts Watson Discovery with Advanced Natural Language Processing Features

IBM Enhances Watson Discovery’s Natural Language Processing Capabilities

IBM has announced significant upgrades to the natural language processing (NLP) features of Watson Discovery. This AI-driven platform facilitates intelligent searching and text analytics, enabling businesses to uncover critical information hidden within their data.

In a notable case, Woodside Energy faced challenges accessing 30 years’ worth of engineering and drilling insights due to unstructured documents. By leveraging Watson Discovery’s existing NLP tools, the company managed to reduce research time by over 75%.

New Enhancements to Watson Discovery

  • Pre-trained Document Structure Understanding: This feature now comes with a new model that can automatically recognize a document’s visual layout without additional input from developers or data scientists.
  • Automatic Text Pattern Detection: An advanced pattern creation tool, currently in beta, allows users to swiftly identify specific text patterns relevant to their business. It can learn from as few as two examples and improves based on user feedback.
  • Advanced NLP Customization Capabilities: IBM has introduced a custom entity extractor, making it easier to train NLP models to recognize specialized, business-specific vocabulary. This reduces the effort required for data preparation and labeling while facilitating quicker model deployment.

“The consistent innovation coming to IBM Watson from our Research division is why leading enterprises in financial services, insurance, and legal sectors rely on IBM. We help them identify emerging trends, enhance operational efficiency, and empower their teams to gain new insights,” stated Daniel Hernandez, General Manager of Data and AI at IBM.

“With the influx of NLP innovations we are adding to Watson Discovery, businesses will find it increasingly easier to sift through data and serve their customers and employees effectively.”
