Cuba and China Unite Forces to Launch Cutting-Edge Artificial Intelligence Institute
Universities from Cuba and China are collaborating to establish an International Artificial Intelligence Institute, set to launch within the next year, as reported by the island’s state media on Tuesday.
Cuban scholars and scientists are actively involved in this initiative led by the Hebei University of International Studies in China. The project will be headed by Dr. Yailé Caballero, a distinguished Cuban Doctor of Science who has recently been honored as an “international expert” by the city in the Asian nation.
According to the state-run Cuban News Agency (ACN), Dr. Caballero emphasized that advancements in artificial intelligence are “crucial” across various scientific applications and sectors. She also noted that this initiative presents an excellent opportunity for Cuban researchers to showcase their “capacity and potential.”
While acknowledging the significance of their recognition, she expressed aspirations to incorporate additional specialists from Spain and Belgium, especially at a time when the artificial intelligence community “remains relatively small.”
Key contributors to this project alongside China include universities from the Cuban cities of Camagüey, Granma, Ciego de Ávila, and Villa Clara, as well as the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, the Technological University, and the University of Computer Sciences, all located in Havana.
Notably, China stands as one of Cuba’s primary allies, ranking as the island’s second-largest trading partner and engaging in various technological development endeavors.
