Melbourne Innovates: Nokia’s AI Technology Enhances Street Cleanliness and Safety

City of Melbourne Trials Nokia’s AI Technology for Cleanliness and Safety

The City of Melbourne is implementing Nokia’s AI technology to enhance the cleanliness and safety of its streets. This local government area is situated in Victoria, Australia, covering 37 square kilometers and housing around 183,756 residents. A significant issue in the city is illegal dumping, which creates serious hygiene and safety concerns.

Through Nokia’s Scene Analytics AI technology, the city aims to better understand waste disposal behaviors within the community. Rob McCabe, Head of Enterprise for Australia and New Zealand at Nokia, stated, “The City of Melbourne is leveraging advanced AI technology to provide a greener and more livable environment for citizens, visitors, and businesses alike. Nokia Scene Analytics is instrumental in monitoring and improving services with proactive, real-time actions that boost the city’s safety, security, and operational efficiency.”

The existing network of cameras will serve as IoT sensors to track waste compactors. Nokia’s AI will process and organize data from these cameras alongside other sources, such as the compactors, to generate real-time alerts and comprehensive reports. Lord Mayor Sally Capp remarked, “This initiative exemplifies how we can harness new technology to expedite the removal of illegal waste, thus making our city cleaner and protecting the environment. Our collaboration with Nokia is one more way we are collecting data to transform Melbourne into a safer, smarter, and more sustainable city.”

A virtual “tripwire” system will facilitate real-time monitoring of the compactors, employing object detection and counting methods to analyze items being disposed of and their effects on the compactor. This data can predict when compactors need maintenance, minimizing downtime. During the trial, all faces and license plates captured were blurred to ensure individual privacy.
