Meta Develops Generative AI Team as Snap Launches ChatGPT Bot

Generative AI is taking center stage in the social media landscape. Meta is establishing a new product division dedicated to generative AI, aiming to incorporate engaging features into all their platforms. Concurrently, Snap has introduced a new chatbot powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shared on Facebook that the teams focused on generative AI will be consolidated. Although details on specific projects were scarce, he mentioned a long-term vision for developing AI personas. Current experiments are underway in various applications like WhatsApp and Messenger, as well as in visual content for Instagram, including innovative filters and advertising formats. This new division will report to Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, as reported by various sources.

“In the short term, we’ll focus on creating expressive tools,” Zuckerberg stated. “Over the longer term, we’ll aim to develop AI personas that can assist users in diverse ways. There’s significant foundational work ahead of us, but I’m enthusiastic about the innovations we will craft along the way,” he added.

In parallel, Snap recently unveiled My AI for Snapchat, an experimental chatbot available to Snapchat+ subscribers. Potential applications of this feature include recommendations, organization, and content creation.

The moves by both Meta and Snap showcase the intense competition among technology giants in the generative AI sector. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are also exploring this space. However, the journey hasn’t been without missteps; Microsoft and Alphabet recently faced challenges that led to significant losses. To address potential issues, Snap preemptively cautioned users about its chatbot: “As with all AI chatbots, My AI may generate unexpected results and can misunderstand user inputs. Please be cautious and avoid sharing sensitive information.”
