OpenAI: Musk Wanted Control or Merger with Tesla
Elon Musk, the visionary CEO behind Tesla and SpaceX, expressed desires for OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research organization, to either merge with Tesla or for him to gain full control over it. This information came to light in a blog post from OpenAI, following a lawsuit Musk filed against the company. The post disclosed email exchanges between 2015 and 2018, during Musk’s active involvement with OpenAI.
In a 2017 email, Musk indicated his wish for majority ownership, control of the board, and the CEO role as OpenAI was contemplating a shift to a for-profit model to secure additional funding. However, OpenAI believed that granting one individual such extensive control contradicted its mission. “Elon wanted us to merge with Tesla or he wanted full control,” OpenAI noted in its blog. They recounted Musk’s departure, highlighting his assertion that there was a need for a competitive entity to challenge Google and DeepMind, and that he intended to pursue this independently while offering support for OpenAI’s separate direction.
When discussions about merging halted, Musk proposed in 2018 that OpenAI could be attached to Tesla to facilitate funding for the automaker. He remarked in an email that “Tesla is the only path that could even hope to hold a candle to Google.” The blog post suggests that Musk’s efforts to initiate a merger were ultimately unsuccessful, leading to his departure from OpenAI. In a closing email, Musk assessed that the probability of OpenAI competing with DeepMind/Google was virtually zero without significant changes in operation and resources.
Musk’s lawsuit, initiated in March 2024, claims OpenAI has breached contract, fiduciary duty, and engaged in unfair competition. He contends that the organization has effectively become “a closed-source de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft after receiving $13 billion in investments from the tech company. OpenAI refutes these claims, asserting that Musk understood the implications behind the “Open” in its name and that it did not necessitate open-sourcing all its technology. OpenAI expressed disappointment over the lawsuit, noting their admiration for Musk.
OpenAI has stated their intention to move for the dismissal of all allegations made by Musk. As of now, Musk has not publicly commented on OpenAI’s blog post regarding the lawsuit.
