Nuance and The Academy Join Forces to Unveil The AI Collaborative Initiative

Nuance Partners with The Academy to Launch The AI Collaborative

Nuance has teamed up with The Health Management Academy (The Academy) to establish The AI Collaborative, an initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Known for developing the speech recognition engine utilized by Siri, Nuance has shifted its focus to AI solutions specifically for healthcare. Currently, it collaborates with 77% of hospitals in the United States, serving over 500,000 physicians each day.

Earlier in the year, Microsoft acquired Nuance, signaling a commitment to a “new era of outcomes-based AI.” This acquisition attracted scrutiny from regulators, who expressed concerns about its potential to diminish competition. Ultimately, regulatory bodies gave their approval, with the European Union regulator stating that Nuance would continue facing considerable competition and that Microsoft would not have undue advantages from the acquisition.

Mark Benjamin, CEO of Nuance, noted, “Combining Nuance’s deep industry expertise with Microsoft’s global cloud ecosystems will allow us to expedite our innovation processes and deliver solutions more effectively to address our customers’ most critical needs.” Both organizations are regarded as leaders in technology, and their partnership is expected to foster a collaborative environment with executives and experts across the healthcare sector.

Renee DeSilva, CEO of The Academy, stated, “Our members have shown great interest in a dedicated platform to explore AI’s potential in healthcare.” She expressed excitement over the expanded partnership, which aims to bring clinical and operational executives together to strategically invest in AI.

The AI Collaborative is set to launch in September 2022, starting with a visit to Microsoft’s headquarters. Following the launch, annual summits will facilitate discussions on how to leverage patient-specific data to enhance care quality, reduce variability, and drive operational enhancements.

“Understanding the problems at hand and the desired outcomes is crucial for successful healthcare innovation through AI,” explained Peter Durlach, Chief Strategy Officer at Nuance. He emphasized that the synergy between Nuance and Microsoft will enable diverse stakeholders to prioritize solutions that address issues like clinician burnout and patient engagement, furthering advancements in precision medicine and clinical decision support across the healthcare landscape.
