Revolutionizing Crime Solving: How Deepfakes Are Uncovering Truths
Deepfakes Used to Assist in Crime Solving
A recent initiative by Dutch police illustrates a novel application of deepfake technology aimed at addressing crime. Traditionally viewed negatively due to its potential for misuse—such as creating non-consensual explicit content or misleading narratives—deepfakes are now being employed for a positive purpose: gathering information to solve cold cases.
In Rotterdam, the police have crafted a deepfake video featuring Sedar Soares, a 13-year-old football enthusiast who lost his life tragically in 2003 while enjoying the snow with friends. The video depicts Soares engaging in activities on a football field, walking past a guard of honor made up of loved ones, including family members and teachers.
“Somebody must know who murdered my darling brother. That’s why he has been brought back to life for this film,” a voice in the clip urges, echoing the family’s plea for information. As the video unfolds, Soares drops a football, followed by his friends and family urging anyone with information to come forward. The video concludes by displaying police contact details, hoping to rekindle memories that could lead to breakthroughs in the investigation.
Detective Daan Annegarn from the National Investigation Communications Team stated, “Science shows that effective storytelling can resonate deeply with potential witnesses and even the perpetrator. What better way to connect than by allowing Sedar and his family to communicate directly?” He acknowledged the sensitive nature of using a deepfake, emphasizing the importance of the family’s consent.
Early results from this initiative appear promising, with police reporting numerous tips since the video’s release. However, they are carefully vetting the credibility of the information provided. “We believe that deepfake technology can deeply impact those involved in the case, encouraging witnesses or even the suspect to come forward,” Annegarn concluded.
