National Robotarium Advances AI and Telepresence Robotics for Remote Healthcare

The National Robotarium, hosted by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, has introduced an innovative AI-driven telepresence robotic solution aimed at facilitating remote health consultations. This technology enables healthcare professionals to evaluate a patient’s physical and cognitive wellbeing from virtually anywhere globally—whether the patient is in the UK, India, the US, or beyond.

Iain Stewart, the UK Government Minister for Scotland, expressed his admiration after visiting the facility, stating, “It was fascinating to visit the National Robotarium and see firsthand how virtual teleportation technology could revolutionize healthcare and assisted living. Backed by £21 million from the UK Government City Region Deal, this leading research center brings investment and job opportunities to the region.”

This project is part of the National Robotarium’s assisted living lab, which focuses on enhancing the lives of individuals coping with various health conditions. Dr. Mario Parra Rodriguez, a cognitive assessment expert from the University of Strathclyde, is involved in this initiative. He believes that this technology will facilitate more frequent health monitoring and assessments, which are crucial for individuals with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive challenges.

“The experience of interacting with a remote robot to guide, assess, and support vulnerable adults affected by debilitating conditions such as Alzheimer’s grants me confidence that we can overcome the challenges of these diseases through transformative technologies,” remarked Rodriguez. He also emphasized the collaboration between various disciplines at the National Robotarium to create solutions that adapt to the needs of those impacted by dementia.

Dr. Mauro Dragone, who is spearheading the research, emphasized the integral role of AI in the project: “Our prototype utilizes machine learning and AI techniques to monitor smart home sensors that detect and analyze daily activities. We’re programming the system to perform comprehensive, non-intrusive assessments of an older individual’s cognitive skills and their independence in daily living.”

The integration of telepresence robots with this system introduces significant advancements. For instance, these robots can be outfitted with advanced sensors and can operate semi-autonomously, providing rich data consistently. Moreover, telepresence robots ensure that clinicians and caregivers remain informed. They can access data from the intelligent sensing system and even control the robot remotely to interact with patients, navigating their environment and performing hands-on assessments.

Recently, the UK government announced tax increases aimed at improving social care, which could alleviate pressures on the NHS following the pandemic. Some speculate that additional tax hikes may follow. However, emerging technologies like this one could offer cost-effective solutions while enhancing the quality of care.

Colin Foskett, Head of Innovation at Blackwood Homes and Care, stated, “Blackwood is always seeking solutions that empower our clients to live independently, promoting choice and control. Robotics has the potential to enhance independent living, deliver superior support, and integrate seamlessly with our digital housing and care system, CleverCogs.” He highlighted that the partnership with the National Robotarium and the design process of the assisted living lab emphasizes customer involvement in the development of new products and services, fostering innovation for better outcomes.

Earlier this year, a significant investment of £22.4 million was made in the National Robotarium, which includes a range of facilities, cutting-edge equipment, and innovative projects designed to drive advancements in robotics.
