Sailing into the Future: IBM’s Mayflower Embarks with Cutting-Edge Edge AI Technology
IBM’s AI-Powered Ship Mayflower Sets Sail
IBM has launched its fully-autonomous edge AI ship, Mayflower, on a groundbreaking crewless journey from Plymouth, UK, to Plymouth, USA. This state-of-the-art vessel is a modern homage to the original Mayflower, which famously transported settlers in 1620, celebrating its historical significance on its 400th anniversary.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, Mayflower 2.0 utilizes onboard edge AI computing to conduct scientific research while navigating the challenging ocean environment—often without any connectivity. As Robert High, VP and CTO of Edge Computing at IBM, explained, “It will be entirely responsible for its own navigation decisions,” using advanced software capable of recognizing various obstacles such as other ships, debris, and marine life.
The ship’s AI captain, developed by MarineAI, integrates IBM’s artificial intelligence capabilities. Interestingly, the AI had to be trained to disregard seagulls to prevent unnecessary evasive maneuvers. Progress can be monitored through a dashboard created by IBM’s digital agency, iX. Despite the challenges, a livestream from the ship’s cameras showcases its journey, albeit with varying reliability due to low bandwidth conditions.
Unlike its predecessor, Mayflower 2.0 will not rely solely on wind for propulsion. Instead, it will feature a wind/solar hybrid propulsion system complemented by a backup diesel generator. Additionally, the new vessel employs advanced navigation technologies such as a GNSS positioning system, SATCOM, RADAR, and LIDAR instead of traditional compasses and nautical charts.
Mayflower is also equipped with a variety of sensors for scientific research, including instruments for measuring acoustics, nutrients, temperature, and samples of water and air. Edge devices onboard will analyze data locally until internet connectivity is restored, at which point data will be transmitted to onshore nodes.
This innovative initiative offers an exciting glimpse into the future of maritime exploration and research. AI News will continue to provide updates on Mayflower’s journey and any significant advancements.
