Samsung Enhances On-Device AI Performance with Innovative LPDDR5X DRAM Technology
Samsung Enhances On-Device AI with LPDDR5X DRAM
Samsung has introduced the industry’s pioneering LPDDR5X DRAM, achieving speeds of up to 10.7 Gbps, which sets a significant new standard in memory technology. This advancement is made possible by utilizing state-of-the-art 12 nanometer process technology, allowing Samsung to achieve exceptional performance metrics alongside the smallest chip size among existing low-power double data rate (LPDDR) products.
YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung, stated, “As the demand for low-power, high-performance memory surges, LPDDR DRAM is anticipated to broaden its applications beyond mobile devices to sectors requiring increased performance and reliability, such as PCs, accelerators, servers, and automobiles.” Bae also emphasized Samsung’s dedication to fostering innovation aimed at meeting the needs of the emerging on-device AI landscape through strategic partnerships.
On-device AI capabilities are becoming increasingly essential, highlighting the need for memory solutions like LPDDR that combine low power usage with high performance. The new 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X offers over a 25% boost in performance and more than a 30% increase in capacity compared to its predecessor. This innovation is tailored to address the growing demands of on-device AI, providing an optimal memory solution that balances high capacity, performance, and energy efficiency.
The mobile DRAM single package capacity has been elevated to 32 gigabytes, a notable advancement for mobile and on-device AI functionalities. Additionally, the LPDDR5X features sophisticated power-saving technologies, including optimized power variation that adapts energy consumption based on workload and extended low-power mode intervals to enhance overall energy savings. These improvements collectively enhance power efficiency by 25% compared to the previous generation, contributing to longer battery life in mobile devices and reduced energy usage in servers, thus lowering the total cost of ownership.
Samsung expects to start mass production of the 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X by the second half of 2024 after completing thorough verification processes with mobile application processor and device manufacturers.
