SenseTime Unveils ‘AI for a Better Tomorrow’ at WAICF

At the World AI Cannes Festival (WAICF), Hong Kong-based AI leader SenseTime presented a keynote titled “AI for a better tomorrow.” George Huang, President of the International Business Group at SenseTime, highlighted the company’s advancements in mixed reality, mobility, city management, and healthcare through AI technology.

Huang noted the growing demand for AI computing services driven by the digital transformation of cities and enterprises, as well as the rapid evolution of sectors like the metaverse and autonomous driving. “We are dedicated to developing AI solutions that foster economic growth, societal progress, and human welfare to tackle global challenges,” he stated.

As the most-funded AI company globally, SenseTime’s facial recognition technology plays a significant role in China’s surveillance apparatus. Their Viper system can analyze and process over 100,000 real-time streams from various sources, such as traffic cameras and ATMs, for tracking purposes. This capability has sparked ethical concerns, prompting SenseTime to actively work on mitigating these apprehensions.

In 2018, the company advocated for establishing facial recognition standards to promote a healthier industry. They emphasized the necessity of “trust levels” to ensure that only highly accurate technologies are employed for sensitive applications, such as finance and law enforcement, while alternative methods can be utilized in less critical areas like entertainment.

During his keynote, Huang reiterated SenseTime’s three key ethical principles: sustainability, human-centric design, and controllability in technology. He encouraged organizations and individuals to find a balance between innovation and ethical considerations.

“With our universal AI infrastructure SenseCore, we have solidified our position in four primary sectors: Smart Business, Smart City, Smart Life, and Smart Auto,” Huang explained, underscoring the integration of powerful computing and leading algorithms in a responsible manner.

At the event, SenseTime showcased a variety of solutions, including:

  • SeaWorld Experience: An immersive and interactive demonstration of AI combined with mixed reality, powered by the metaverse platform SenseMARS.
  • SenseAuto: A comprehensive automotive platform that offers a full range of applications, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), smart cabin features, vehicle-to-road connectivity, L4-level autonomous driving, and Robobus, aimed at reducing driver errors and enhancing road safety.

Additional demonstrations at the SenseTime booth illustrated the potential of AI in enhancing urban living, healthcare, and education.
