Stock image provider Shutterstock has introduced an AI-driven image generator that prioritizes ethical considerations. Many existing text-to-image generators have faced criticism regarding their practices. Recently, it was reported that Getty Images has initiated legal action against Stability AI, the creator of Stable Diffusion, due to allegations of copyright infringement.
An independent examination of 12 million images sourced from a pool of 2.3 billion used in training Stable Diffusion revealed that a significant portion was obtained from stock image sites and platforms filled with user-generated content, such as WordPress, DeviantArt, and Tumblr. This has raised concerns among numerous artists who believe that text-to-image generators threaten their careers, particularly when their works are utilized without compensation or acknowledgment.
Shutterstock claims its AI generator leverages assets that reflect the diversity of our society, and it asserts that it compensates the human artists contributing to this database. Paul Hennessy, CEO of Shutterstock, remarked:
