Study Reveals 1.4 Million UK Jobs at Risk of Automation in 2023
Automation’s Impact on the UK Job Market
A recent forecast by Faethm AI indicates that over 1.4 million jobs in the UK could face automation within the current year. Faethm aims to prepare for the future of work by utilizing an AI engine, trained on extensive workforce data, to determine which jobs require reskilling or upskilling.
James McLeod, VP for the EMEA region at Faethm, emphasized the necessity for both employers and employees to alter their viewpoints. “The future of work is already upon us, and technology’s influence on jobs is not uniform,” he noted. McLeod advocates for recognizing how technology complements existing roles and encourages targeted reskilling initiatives to adapt to the emerging job landscape. This not only enhances business productivity but also ensures ethical treatment of employees, fostering a workforce proficient in digital skills for forthcoming challenges.
According to Faethm’s latest UK Workforce Forecast (registration required), 4.8% of jobs—equivalent to approximately 1.4 million full-time positions—are projected to be automated in the next 12 months. Furthermore, an additional 2.9% of roles are anticipated to be enhanced by AI. Certain regions, such as Wales (5.3%), Northern Ireland (5.2%), and the North of England (5.1%), have the highest percentages of jobs at risk of automation.
Nan Craig, a Data Analyst at Faethm, stated, “Typically, economic downturns spur an increase in automation, as companies seek to replace costly labor with more affordable automated solutions. The unique conditions stemming from COVID-19 have made automation even more appealing, as businesses look to reduce human interaction in public spaces.” The costs associated with human labor—boosted by safety protocols and self-isolation requirements—make automated systems a more attractive option.
Jobs in sectors such as wholesale, retail, and finance—accounting for approximately nine percent of the workforce—are particularly vulnerable, with Faethm predicting that around 932,000 full-time positions could be automated. While many traditional roles in the UK may be under threat due to automation, the research suggests that the introduction of new technologies could potentially generate around 382,000 new jobs.
As the country recovers from the pandemic, Faethm advocates for leveraging AI to enhance rather than replace human roles. In this new landscape, automation can manage repetitive and unengaging tasks, freeing individuals to concentrate on areas where machines struggle, such as creativity, compassion, and interpersonal relationships.

Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasingly vital role in various sectors, including finance and logistics, particularly through innovative applications of machine learning. These advancements are transforming business operations significantly.
One key area where machine learning is making a difference is in enhancing the security of cloud-native containers. By using advanced algorithms, organizations can better protect their applications and data in the cloud. The integration of machine learning in security measures helps to detect vulnerabilities and respond to threats more rapidly.
Moreover, there are instances where AI and automation are being misused, such as in the music industry, where bots are allegedly employed to fraudulently inflate streaming numbers. This highlights the dual-edged nature of technological advancement, where the same tools can enhance services while also potentially facilitating unethical practices.
Additionally, partnering with outsourced developers offers numerous advantages for businesses, especially in implementing cutting-edge technology solutions efficiently. This collaboration can lead to innovative product development and enhanced operational flexibility.
Education, Legislation & Government
Teachers in England have received approval to incorporate artificial intelligence into their teaching practices. This significant move marks a pivotal moment in educational methodology, allowing educators to leverage advanced technologies for enhanced learning experiences.
Artificial Intelligence
The impact of AI is rapidly expanding into the cryptocurrency sector. As technology evolves, so does its integration into various financial systems, altering how cryptocurrencies are utilized and managed.
AGI, Artificial Intelligence
According to Sam Altman of OpenAI, we are now entering the era of superintelligence. This advancement promises to reshape industries, engage ethical considerations, and redefine societal norms as powerful AI systems become more prevalent.
