Twitter Introduces Labels for Beneficial Bots on Its Platform
Artificial Intelligence and Education
Twitter is embarking on a new initiative aimed at recognizing beneficial bots on its platform. The conversation around bots has evolved recently, often highlighting their negative impacts, including the spread of propaganda and misinformation, particularly during critical events like the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, not all bots are harmful; many serve as vital resources, providing timely updates about severe weather, natural disasters, and emergency situations. Some bots play an educational role by sharing historical facts and information.
In a recent announcement, Twitter stated that it is piloting a labeling system designed to help users identify accounts that utilize automation responsibly. This new label aims to give users additional context about the automated content they encounter on the platform.
According to Twitter, this decision stems from user feedback indicating a desire for greater clarity regarding non-human accounts. A study from Carnegie Mellon University indicated that roughly half of the accounts tweeting about the coronavirus were likely automated. Twitter remains committed to removing inauthentic accounts that violate its rules.
This labeling system is akin to Twitter’s verification process, which displays a blue checkmark next to verified users to signify their authenticity. Unlike verified accounts, which may not guarantee the accuracy of the content they post, Twitter is banking on the reliability of tweets from these labeled ‘good’ bots.
