UK and France Collaborate on AI Initiatives
The UK and France have unveiled new funding initiatives and collaborations focused on enhancing global AI safety. This announcement follows the UK’s recent membership in Horizon Europe, a move seen as a significant step towards mending relations post-Brexit for the benefit of Europe.
Today, the French Minister for Higher Education and Research, Sylvie Retailleau, will meet with UK Secretary of State Michelle Donelan in London. This meeting marks a critical development in scientific cooperation between the two nations.
Building upon a legacy of joint efforts that have led to remarkable innovations like the Concorde and the Channel Tunnel, the ministers will endorse a joint declaration aimed at strengthening research collaboration. A notable commitment of £800,000 will support combined research initiatives, especially within the Horizon Europe framework.
In addition, the formation of a partnership between the UK’s AI Safety Institute and France’s Inria will be announced, reflecting a mutual dedication to responsible AI technology development. This partnership is particularly timely as France prepares to host the AI Safety Summit later this year, intended to continue discussions on frontier AI testing established during last year’s summit in the UK.
The creation of a French-British joint committee focusing on Science, Technology, and Innovation will further encourage collaboration across various sectors, including low-carbon hydrogen, space observation, and research security.
UK Secretary of State Michelle Donelan stated, “The connections between the brightest minds in the UK and France are deep and enduring, from aerospace breakthroughs to addressing climate change. It is essential to support our innovators and harness their ideas to create jobs and stimulate business growth alongside our closest neighbor.”
This partnership between the UK and France highlights their dedication to advancing scientific research and innovation, particularly in emerging technologies like AI and quantum computing.
