UK and South Korea to Co-host AI Seoul Summit

The UK and South Korea are poised to jointly host the AI Seoul Summit on May 21 and 22. This event aims to lay the groundwork for the secure development of AI technologies, utilizing the cooperative framework established by the Bletchley Declaration.

During the two-day summit, a virtual leaders’ session will be co-chaired by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. This will be followed by an in-person gathering of Digital Ministers, co-hosted by UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho.

This summit continues the discussions held last year at the historic Bletchley Park, focusing on AI safety, inclusion, and innovation. Its primary goal is to ensure that advancements in AI are beneficial for humanity while managing potential risks and enhancing global tech governance. “The summit we held at Bletchley Park was a generational moment,” remarked Donelan. “By continuously bringing together international governments and diverse perspectives, we can foster a global approach that enables us to harness the transformative power of this defining technology safely and responsibly.”

Minister Lee Jong-Ho emphasized the significance of the Seoul Summit for furthering global collaboration on AI safety and innovation. He stated, “AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace that far surpasses our expectations. It is vital to establish global norms and governance to leverage these technological advancements for the betterment of humanity.” He expressed hope that the summit would strengthen global cooperation regarding AI safety, innovation, inclusion, and the promotion of sustainable AI development.

Innovation is a core focus for the UK, as evidenced by initiatives like the Manchester Prize and the formation of the AI Safety Institute, which is the first government-backed organization dedicated to AI safety. This proactive approach underscores the UK’s commitment to international collaboration on AI governance, exemplified by a recent agreement with the US on AI safety protocols.

The Seoul Summit will also feature the release of the International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety. This report, independently spearheaded by Turing Prize winner Yoshua Bengio, represents a collective effort to compile the finest scientific insights on AI safety. It highlights the summit’s role as not only a discussion platform but also a catalyst for actionable strategies towards safe AI development.

The agenda of the AI Seoul Summit reflects the urgency of tackling the challenges and prospects introduced by AI, encompassing discussions on model safety assessments and fostering sustainable AI growth. As the world embraces AI technologies, the summit exemplifies a concerted effort to cultivate a future where technology advances humanity while ensuring prosperity and inclusivity for everyone.
