Stable Diffusion: Public Release of Text-to-Image Generator
The innovative text-to-image generator, Stable Diffusion, is now accessible for public use. Developed by Stability AI, this tool was initially made available to researchers earlier this month. It claims to offer a remarkable leap in both speed and quality on consumer-grade GPUs.
Built upon the latent diffusion model pioneered by CompVis and Runway, Stable Diffusion has been enhanced through contributions from leading figures in generative AI, including Katherine Crowson, Open AI, and Google Brain. “This model builds on the work of many excellent researchers, and we anticipate a positive impact on society and science in the coming years as it reaches billions worldwide,” stated Emad Mostaque, CEO of Stability AI.
Stable Diffusion’s core dataset, known as LAION-Aesthetics, was trained on a filtered selection of 5.85 billion images based on aesthetic appeal, utilizing ratings from initial alpha testers. The generator requires as little as 10GB of VRAM and can create images with a resolution of 512×512 pixels in merely seconds.
Apolinário, a Machine Learning Art Engineer at Hugging Face, remarked, “We’re thrilled that cutting-edge text-to-image models are being developed in an open manner. We are eager to partner with CompVis and Stability.ai to ensure these models are released responsibly and ethically, effectively democratizing machine learning capabilities across the community.”
