“Unlocking Sustainable Growth: How AI+ Bridges the Gap in a Divided World”
At the recent AI for Good Global Summit held in Geneva, Switzerland, He Biao, President of China Mobile Communications Group, captivated a full house with his insights on artificial intelligence’s potential.
“AI has emerged as a pivotal force for social and economic advancement,” he stated enthusiastically.
During his presentation, he explored the concept of “AI+,” emphasizing the urgent need to harness rapid technological progress to foster sustainable development and to prevent widening social and technological gaps. He posited that the accelerated shift from AI to “AI+” brings forth new prospects, but he cautioned that addressing three significant divides is essential for ensuring equitable access to these opportunities.
He identifies these challenges as: the Data Divide, the Computility Divide, and the AI Divide.
He elaborated on the critical role of data as the driving element in the creation of AI models and tools in this new era. While quality data is essential for training AI models, many regions around the globe face a shortage of accessible data needed for tailored learning systems.
Additionally, discrepancies in access to computing power across various regions and organizations pose another major hurdle.
“High-performance computing resources are not only expensive but also energy-intensive and unevenly distributed,” he remarked.
Finally, the “AI Divide” pertains to the disparity in AI literacy across different generations and the access to AI tools, which is deepening global inequalities concerning AI capabilities. He urged that for sustainable development, the international community must unite to tackle these three emerging divides.
He shared numerous initiatives from China Mobile aimed at harnessing AI for sustainable development while embracing the “digital intelligent era” to close gaps in production, technology, and data access.
By implementing “AI+” strategies, companies can enhance their digital competencies, and China Mobile is at the forefront of revolutionizing this landscape to address pressing challenges.
For instance, they lead in Open Data Sharing Services, ensuring that data is low-cost, reliable, and easily accessible for developers, allowing them to unlock the full potential of data for societal advancement.
Moreover, the creation of a Data Switching Service Network (DSSN) promotes secure and efficient data exchange and supports the deployment of large-scale AI models for various uses, currently aiding efforts in urban planning, emergency responses, and more.
China Mobile is also actively refining big data solutions to combat fraud, with their AI intercepting over 370 million scam calls and 280 million fraudulent text messages last year alone.
In a bid to extend benefits to broader demographics, a domestically developed Large Language Model named Jiutian is making AI applications available to households, businesses, and public services alike.
They are also opening their AI products and resources to multiple learning platforms, providing practical tools that empower educators and students to engage in AI research and innovation, enabling quick mastery of AI skills.
To tackle the accessibility divide, they have devised an AI-powered sign language digital commentator specifically designed for World Cup broadcasts, ensuring that hearing-impaired viewers enjoy “barrier-free” football match experiences.
In closing, Mr. He Biao underscored the necessity of upholding ethical standards, fostering international cooperation, and ensuring security in the ongoing evolution of AI technologies. He concluded with a commitment to “Joining hands for a shared future” and “embracing the vision of building a community” to guarantee that AI serves the benefit of all.
