Meta’s Protein-Folding AI: A Breakthrough for Science and Medicine

Meta has introduced a groundbreaking protein-folding AI that promises to make significant strides in scientific research and the development of new treatments. Previously known as Facebook, the company has consistently been recognized as a leader in artificial intelligence, having developed the widely-used open-source framework PyTorch. Earlier this year, Meta also became a founding member of an initiative to promote AI adoption.

With its strategic shift towards the metaverse, there have been growing concerns from shareholders about the potential erosion of the company’s focus on core AI advancements. One notable voice, Brad Gerstner, founder of Altimeter Capital, expressed in a letter that Meta should reassess its investments in the metaverse to reinforce its status as a premier AI leader. He highlighted that Meta’s commitment to AI could yield innovative products that can be marketed to billions, citing examples of projects that reflect a renaissance in AI technology.

In a bid to address these concerns, Meta recently unveiled its protein-folding AI, the ESM Metagenomic Atlas. This new tool features over 600 million protein sequences along with predictions for nearly the entire MGnify90 database. The company has made the model, now accessible via an API, available to researchers for scientific exploration. Meta claims that this language model can accelerate the prediction of protein structures by up to 60 times.

“ESMFold exemplifies how AI can equip us with innovative tools to comprehend the natural world, akin to the microscope’s role in unveiling previously unseen dimensions of life,” stated Meta. The company emphasized that while much of AI research has been focused on helping computers interpret the world similarly to humans, understanding the intricate language of proteins has eluded both human comprehension and even the most advanced computational methods. AI presents a unique opportunity to decode this complex language.
